The purpose of this exercise is to improve your visualization skills. It will start off very easy and get very, VERY hard.
STEP 1: Visualize a wooden cube.
STEP 2: Now paint the cube - what color is it?
STEP 3: Imagine the cube is cut vertically by two saws simultaneously into even sections - how many sections do you have?
STEP 4: Now imagine the cube is being cut in the very same way again from the top, only perpendicular to the other cuts - how many pieces do you have now?
STEP 5: Visualize the cube being cut once again by two saws, only this time horizantally across the other cuts. How many cubes are there now?
STEP 6: How many cubes are painted on three sides? Two sides? Are there any cubes with no painted sides?
The goal is to be able to visualize the cube and its sections as they are being cut. You should strive to visualize this well enough to count the cubes with various painted sides. Good luck!
